Design Brief 5 - Research
Penguin
Penguin Books is a British publishing house. It was co-founded in 1935 by Sir Allen Lane with his brothers Richard and John. They have published various different books which are similar with almost every child in the UK. As we read these books within school. They have an iconic book design which includes a three colour palette, orange, black and cream. The type is black and placed on within the cream box in the middle of the book to create contrast and allow the reader eye to focus on the information. The orange surrounding the cream box is there to draw the readers eye towards the book cover and focus the reader attention to information since it is just a plain block of colour.
Book Cover - B&W Illustrations
When conducting research into different book cover I found that the ones were I was drawn towards were covers which were illustration based design. I found three different book covers which used only black and white within their covers. I really liked how they used the illustration to tell the story of the book and typography was used as secondary element within the design.
Book Cover - Coloured Illustrations
I also found more book covers design which used a similar style of cover however these included colour within the design. The blue cover I found primary used typography within their design in a scipt typeface which I really liked as it gave the design more interest. Also using the script font injunction with the illustration gave the book cover a certain style and feel. Within all the covers I research I found I liked the covers which experimented with illustration within their design and I think this is something I should implement into my design.
