I started this brief the same way I did with Kira, since it worked so well I told Jack my interests and he cross-referenced with his interests and we found we both had a common interest in branding, type, and publications. We both decided to focus on the type side as we both enjoy it and have not done much work based on type.

We both wanted this brief to not be very restrictive so we had room to experiment and have fun and design stuff we wouldn't normally.

Brief Introduction

I remember a page on Instagram that I have seen recently which was '36daysoftype' this is an account that runs a event where you design a letter a day and tag them on Instagram. We both liked this idea as it will not take long each day and give us room to experiment. However, we expanded on it by developing prompts for each of the days to give us a starting point.

We will each have to research the topic and produce a letterform influenced by said prompt

After 36 days, we will have a full alphabet as well as a full set of numbers, made up of the best letters.

We will each upload our produced letterforms on each day to Instagram.

After we have completed all the letterforms and number we will come together and crit the work we have produced over the 36 days. Then begin to merge both of our letterforms to produce a full alphabet.

The next task will be one of us will produce a type specimen whilst the other one uses the typeface within a piece of design to showcase the typeface.

Brief

Above is the official brief we wrote up together.

Prompts

To think of the daily prompts we thought of three categories that we could focus on, they were random objects, theme, and art style. After identifying these we began to list as many things under each category as we could until we got a prompt for every day.  We wanted the themes to be relatively loose as this will give us the most room to experiment during the design stage of this brief.

Above are the 39 prompts we produced, however, I suggested that this order is quite forced as you can clearly identify the categories we chose. The top of the list is just filled with different themes.

To combat this we added the prompts into a random wheel and spun it until all 36 prompts were picked below are screenshots of this process.

Work Process

We also wanted to limit ourselves to an hour and a half per letter each day. This was to make sure we had the rest of the day to focus on other briefs as well as ensuring we spent even time on each of the letters.

The plan I produced was:
research into the topic - 20 mins
blog the research - 5 mins
Ideas/drawing - 20 mins
blog the ideas - 10 mins
digital/final design - 20 mins
upload Instagram
blog everything else - 15 mins

Timetable

Jack shared his timetable for this whole of 603 with me which is a day to day calendar which I then mapped out the letter for each day as well as the theme. Below is the timetable I produced:

Since we are doing a letter a day as well as the ten numbers the project will last till the 1st of March and then we have given ourselves another week to produce the rest of the brief. This includes developments, crits a type specimen, and a showcase of the typeface being used within a design. This makes the deadline for this brief the 9th of March.
