Prompt

The prompt for today is Technology

Research into the prompt

Above is some basic research I did into technology, which allowed me find out what technology by definition.

These were the first images that came up when I googled technology and I found some of this photo too on the nose and typical. However, during this stage, I found that the circuit board feel was very interesting so I looked into that further.

Above is some basic photo gathering of the circuit board style of design and I think it is so interesting how everything is perfectly aligned to one another and it all works together and is often going to a specific point. However, when looking closer I think this style wouldn't work on a small scale letterform which I'm producing.

So instead I'm going to take a more experimental approach with the anatomy of the letter 'a' within my design. As technology is very experimental and it keeps pushing the boundaries.

Basic letterform anatomy

Above is a letterform anatomy photo that identifies all the different sections which make up the traditional letterforms.

Above is me breaking down the basic fundamental of a letter a and understanding how the letterform is made up and how I could adapt this and push it further to relate to the prompt for the letter a which is technology.

Ideas

During this whole brief, I wanted to experiment with working on an iPad with an apple pencil and try to implement it into my everyday design practice. So above are some initial sketches I did for the letter a. Within all of these designs I tried to push the letter a further by altering the anatomy of the letter and making sections bigger than what they normally are.

The bottom left letter is the most successful letterform I did and will be the next which I take forward into the development stage. This is because it looks the best and it pushes the letter a however it still allows the letterform to be easily identifiable at first glance.

Development

Still, within the Ipad, I look the letterform and filled it in and doing so allowed me to see all the inconsistencies within the letter. I did try to fix them within the iPad however I'm still learning and I could clean the letter up a lot better and faster within illustrator.

Above are 2 screenshots which shows me bring the letterform into illustrator and recreating it within the program. This was a lot easier for me as I'm more familiar with the illustrator program rather than procreate on the Ipad.

After making the letter form in illustrator I started to straight up all the lines and make the overall shape of the letter work better and play around with the different thicknesses at different points in the letterform. The biggest change I made was that I rotated the letter and cut off the bottom straight to ensure the letterform fit on the baseline correct when used within the typeface.

Final Design

Above is the final letter 'A' I produced for the prompt 'Technology'.
