Design Brief 4 - Research
Traditional Painting and Decorating logos
I conducted some general research into current painting and decorating logos and found many of them were combination marks which included either a paint brush, paint bucket or paint roller. Many of these designs looked like there done very quickly and just slapped together without any real thought. The most common type of logo I found was a paint brush with the company name in it or the name of the company beside either a paint brush, paint bucket or paint roller.
Contemporary Painting and Decorating logos
After looking at the traditional painting and decorating logos I then moved onto focusing my searches on more contemporary designs. Again I found that they often included a paint brush, paint bucket or paint roller. However this was implemented in a better way as the chose a better illustration and a typeface which matched. Rather than the first font they found which is what the traditional painting and decorating logos look like. These design often used a clean, bold San serif font alongside a single colour illustration. This is something I should explore within my design work.
I really like the designs which incorporate a line illustration rather than solid colour illustrations. As I found this made the design look and feel more modern and it also allows it to stand out from the rest of the logo. As I found many logo which used a solid colour illustration within their logo. Again this is something I should consider within the designing stage of this brief.
Brand Refresh
After looking at various different painting and decorating logos, I then moved onto researching brand refresh and what makes them successful. When research I always found that the new logo took elements from the old logo and presented them in a cleaner way. This is because they want a new look but for people to still be able to recognise the brand. This is something I should consider when designing the new logo. Within the Starbucks logo I found that they kept the illustration but got rid of the type within their logo and this was because the brand already has such strong recognition they don’t need the name of their company within the logo. Many of the brand refresh I research were logo which were simplified or explored a new typeface. Again this is something I should consider within my design.
