Design Brief 6 - Social Media Design

After producing the lookbook, I brought in all the design elements I used into illustartor and began to piece together the elements to create the social media posts. This will ensure that the designs I produce will be cohesive with one another if I use the same elements. To begin I started out by producing 6 posts which can be posted each day before the drop to build hype for the clothing. These posts gave a tease of the style of the clothing items and get people taking about the brand. As within my research, I found that building hype around the brand makes the sale of the item go better and it makes people want to buy your items. After I was happy with the 6 teaser posts, I then moved onto designing another 3 which would be posted at the same time showing off the clothing items and give a size guide for the clothing. Within all of the designs for the social media posts I used the same background colour as the lookbook as well as the green tape and typeface to ensure all the designs I produced were cohesive with one another.

After I was happy with my designs, I then mocked it up on an Instagram template to see what the posts would look like when posted onto the platform.

Within the images, you can see my first attempt at producing a look book for the clothing brand I created. This was a very basic design as I included my design on mockups and placed it into InDesign. However I did find the use of the green tape successful as it brought together all the designs and made them look cohesive with one another. I look back at the design and knew I wasn't happy with what I produced.

So I then began to put more effort into the design of the lookbook and began to think about the layout and style of the lookbook. I started out by changing the background colour to a dark black as this fit the brand better than white better. I also implement design elements from the clothing items themselves and used them within the lookbook to keep them cohesive with one another. An example of this was I used a similar type design on the hoodie as the information on the pages within the lookbook. I also ensured to include all the mockups without a person to show that the designs are genderless and for everyone not just the people in the mockups. The only design style I brought over from the original design was the tape as this tied everything together and made it look cohesive. The final improvement I made to the lookbook was to produce a size guide for the t-shirt which includes all the sizes therefore including everyone and making my brand accessible to everyone.

After producing the t-shirt design I then moved onto designing the hoodie which is part of the requirements for the brief. After experimenting with different layouts, scale and location on the t-shirt design I knew I didn't have to do this again as I knew the small scale logo in the middle of the clothing item worked the best. However, I did explore titling the logo and putting it at a large scale just to see what it looks like. But again the small scale logo worked better.

Once I was happy with the placement and scale of the logo on the hoodie design, I added a small spider illustration to the sleeve of the hoodie as this would lead onto the back of the design of the hoodie. This was placed to connect both the front and back design together. I created the spider illustration by taking an image of a spider and then using the pen tool within illustrator to trace the spider very roughly. This, therefore, produced a solid stylised spider illustration.

I felt like the hoodie needed something else on the front as it was too similar to t-shirt design. So I added some type surrounding the logo which I found to be very common when researching into streetwear. Many brand add extra information to develop a specific style for their clothing items. I added the year as well as the brand name and the location where the hoodie was designed.

For the back design of the hoodie, I found during my research many of the streetwear brand use repeated type within their designs and it often only outlined. So I tried it for the back of the hoodie and I really liked it, originally I only repeated the type three times but doing it four fit the overall ratio of the hoodie. As it made the type design longer. Again I also included the spider illustration over the type to tie the front and back of the hoodie together.

After producing the back of the hoodie, I felt like it need something extra. So I decided to add a illustration of a web to tie the spider into the design more as well as giving the design more depth. I chose to do it in a black colour to match the black type on the front of the hoodie as well as ensure the illustration was subtle. As I didn't want the spider web illustration to draw the eye over the type design on the back of the hoodie.

After producing the logo for the brand, I then moved onto designing the t-shirt. During my research, I found that many streetwear brands have their logo on the front and then design something for the back of the t-shirt. I took the same approach for my t-shirt design I experimented with the scale of the logo on the shirt and various different angles as well as different positions on the shirt. However, I found that the t-shirt design looked the best when the logo was placed in the middle and at the top of the t-shirt on a small scale.

Once I was happy with the design I produced on the black t-shirt I then reversed the colour of the logo and t-shirt and produced the same design but on a white t-shirt with a black logo.

When looking back at my research I found that streetwear has links to skate culture and style. So I took this idea and decided to implement a graphic illustration of a skater on the back of the t-shirt design. I chose to do a graphic illustration rather than an image because again within my research I found that streetwear design often included illustrations or stylised images with effect layered over it rather than the raw image itself. For my design, I found an image of a skater on Unsplash and brought it into photoshop and then added a threshold layer style ontop of it to create a stylised graphic illustration of the image. To keep the back of the t-shirt cohesive with the brand and front of the t-shirt I added another piece of tape over the skater design. Then included the logo without the tape in a vertical format.

Once I was happy with the design I produced on the back of the white t-shirt I then reversed the colour of the graphic illustration to therefore making it white.

After producing all the logo design I then designed a simple brand style guide which is shown above. This includes the logos, colours, typeface for the brand. The typeface used within the branding was 'Druk wide bold' and the three colours I used within the branding was a bright green an off black and a off white. Producing a style guide ensure if another designer were to design something for the brand they would get the correct colours, typeface and style within their designs. Which would therefore make all the design produced for the brand cohesive with one another no matter who designed them.

I started out this logo design stage by quickly sketching out some ideas on the Ipad, after coming up with the name I then shorten it to 'YTBT' the initials of the brand. I tried various different brushes within procreate. These were very quick sketches and I found they didn't contribute to anything so I moved onto developing the logo within illustrator.

After identifying that the logo design wasn't working in procreate on the Ipad I then began within illustrator by writing the full name of the brand as well as the initials for the brand within various different typefaces. I found that the bold fonts were more successful as letterforms were more legible and I like the style it gave to the letterforms. The most successful typeface I tried within this section was called 'Druk' and this will be the typeface I move forward with.
During initial sketches on the Ipad I included a star symbol within the type ad I really like the look and feel this gave to the logo. As it was something different and gave the brand more personality. Also within my research, I found streetwear brands also incorporate some symbols within their branding. Within the photo, I experimented with various different symbols between the letterforms within the logo. I put the symbol between the B and T as I felt this was a nature pause place for when you say the brand's name. The more successful symbol was the star and that will be the symbol I use within my branding.

I wanted to make the logo more interesting, so I took it into photoshop and applied ink bleed effect to the type. This was achieved by adding a blur effect to the type and threshold the design. To make it look more distressed I added a displacement map to the design which gave the design more texture. This is because it removes bits from the design and added sections outside it to make it looked it is poorly printed. During this stage, I also increased the tracking of the type as the letterform merged with each other too much and made it not legible when the tracking was tight. I really liked this effect but within this experiment, I used a displacement map whose texture was too big and made the design look too distressed.

I experiment with various other displacement maps ontop of the design and I found that a map that didn't have much texture worked better. This will be the design I take forward.

After producing the final type design for the logo, I then used a tape texture to overlap on top of the type to place the season and year the drop was released. I added an adjustment layer ontop of tape layer to change the colour of the tape to a bright green. This is because I found that green or yellow is seen as a genderless colour. I really like the addition of the tape to the design as it makes it more interest and fits the streetwear style more.

After producing the logo with the initial I took the same process and designed a logo with the full name of the brand.

DB6 - Name Generation

I started out this brief, by producing a spider diagram of different names for the clothing brand, I tried to find words that included everyone. I even added include within a thesaurus to see what came up as I wanted to brand to start with approachability right down to the name. I really liked the name 'yet to be titled' as it was inclusive and approachable and showed that things don't have to label or titled.
