-be very specific
-if you do penguin either make it a quick brief on 1 cover or do all 3

what makes a good brief
-very specific not babble
-room to explore
-be flexible
-outlined what you plan to research
-a set time limit
-clear idea of what the deliverable could be
-what you are required to make
-deliverable - consist list
-something that hasn't been done before
   -something interesting
-something that is going to challenge you
-make sure it's achievable
-maybe not start a new skill
-this is not the time to figure something out
-a brief that looks at current issues
-allocate time for development
   -early stage of the brief
-could someone pick up the brief and understand it and do it!!!

brief section
1 or 2 lines, something to go back too, something brief

research are important to write the brief and identify what will make the best deliverables

set of design boards per brief

top tips to write a brief
-Be very specific with the brief
-Realistic aims for the deliverables
-Set your a time limit and understand what you can achieve in that limit

-have a problem and way your going to solve
-anyone should be able to understand it
-be realistic

EP - Statement of Intent tutorial

Extended Practice - Statement of Intent tutorial

OUGD603
______________________________________________________

Notes
- Mostly good
- Need to condense it a little be / make it more focused
-Think about the audience
-Think who I'm designing for

Overall I think the tutorial was very useless and brought up some good points as well as answered my questions which I had. Moving forward I need work on my statement of intent further and begin to condense it down more and maybe make it more focused. The brief I have initially found I should start to write them into the brief template, I said I wanted to have at least 2 briefs completed by the 10th of December if possible. I should also begin to work on the collaborative brief with Kira as soon as and complete that brief as soon as.

ST1 - Questions about your design practice

Study Task 1  - Questions about your design practice

OUGD603
______________________________________________________

Set one
When considering your design practice what have you learnt in the last seven days?
Within the last seven days, I have learned to design and produce my own mock-ups from already existing photos and product shots. I have also started to learn how I could create a 3D model of something and then create it into a mock-up.

What practical skills do you envy in others?
The practical skill which I envy within others is an illustration, as this is a style that interests me. However, when I try to design something similar it never comes out as good. As well as people who have good time management.

What do you admire the most about yourself?
I admire that I have the ability to work fast within the computer and i'm able to put what I have in my head on the illustrator page. I can also produce a vast amount of different developments which shows the progression of my design and how I ended up with a certain design

Do you think social media effects your mental health?
Personally I don't think social media effects my mental health, however when I switch to my design account I always find that I look and work and I'm never going to be able to produce work as good as them. However on the other hand when looking at my design account and when I see a certain style or design, It makes me motivated to design something similar to see if I'm able to design within that design.

Do you use humour to improve your design practice?
I don't think I use humour to improve my design practice.

Set two
Is there anything your do differently to most people in relation to your design practice?
I think what I do differently to people to most people in my design practice is move straight onto the computer after a short amount of time sketching as I find it easier to get my ideas down on the computer.

What makes you laugh?
????

What is your biggest strength?
My biggest strength is my ability on the computer and the speed at which I can mock things up. Another strength I have is to quickly learn a new technique or program and use it effectively within my work. Ability to work under pressure and at the last minute

Would you consider yourself introverted or extroverted when presenting your work?
I would consider myself as both as it depends on the audience to which one I'm, as well as the work I'm showing.

What is your worst habit when evaluating your work formatively?
I think my worst habit is that I make too many developments of the same design with small changes and then not being able to decide which one works the best as the changes are so small.

Set three
What is the biggest waste of time in your day?
My biggest waste of time in the day is the time I take in the morning/afternoon to actually get out of bed.

What brief are you looking forward to at the moment?
The collaborate brief with kira, redesigning a restaurant

What do you often complain about when you are researching?
I often complain on the amount of time it is taking to do the research.

What new design process do you want to learn?
I want to learn more techniques with animation and website design and how the user interacts with UI and UX design.

What is the biggest challenge you have had to overcome in last two years within your design process?
The biggest challenge I had to overcome within my design process is that doing things physically can lead to new ideas and I should explore them more often. Even if I don't do anything with it the freedom it gives can lead to new and exciting ideas.

DB1 - Collaboration Brief (with Kira)

Design Brief 1 - Collaboration Brief (with Kira)

Notes

my interests
-type
-editorial
-puplications
-merch/t-shirts
-screenprinting
-animation
-poster design
-album design
-book-binding
-branding

I told Kira my interests and she cross-referenced with her interests and we found we both had a common interest in branding, type, album design, and merch/T-shirt design.

Ideas
After we identified we wanted we were both interested in we began to look as soon ideas we could do for the design section. These were our ideas

-space junk - design for an issue, like something more brief

-rebranding
    -restaurant
    -drinks brand
    -alcohol
    -chocolate bar
    -coffee

-design for an issue

-design a 'guide of how to design' - editorial piece

When looking through the ideas we both found rebranding a restaurant or developing a new identity for an opening restaurant interested us the most and the idea we wanted to go with. When talking we also found that both of our first design projects ever were a branding project so this could show the development of us as designers. Comparing our first project to one of our last projects at university.

Simple Brief

Area of focus: Branding of a restaurant/street food truck (trinity kitchen)

What are we trying to communicate: use branding to increase sales and stand out from the other food places

Audience: students - student discount voucher?

The problem we are trying to solve: they stand out but don't stand out form one another - too similar - we could design wayfinding to locate truck easier

Primary Research: go to trinity kitchen, take menus etc.

Brief Paragraph

Our brief is going to be to brand a food truck restaurant that is going to be located in Leeds trinity kitchen. As this is usually fairly populated with students, we feel that this would be an appropriate target audience. We found the problem of not being able to clearly identify each restaurant, so we want to use branding to fix this issue by creating a dedicated style and aesthetic to allow it to be identified from the others. The outcomes would be (but not limited to) a logo, menu, basic food truck design.

Drafts
My design practice hasn’t really changed since starting uni, I have learnt new techniques which can be implement but my basic framework has stayed the same. I always start with pencil and paper and sketch my ideas and then move to the computer to makes these digital. From that I then develop and refine the design until I’m happy with the final outcome.

During my time at LAU, I have explored a vast amount of techniques and process and found what works for me and what I find interesting my personal practice revolves around the digital producing of design. However, this does not mean I wouldn’t explore physical outcomes or techniques if the brief called for it, as one of my favourite projects was book binding. I’m interested in so many areas of design and enjoy the individual challenges they all present. However, during my time, I have found certain areas of design to be more interest to me like branding, type design, editorial design – book blinding, advertisement and animation. I have found myself moving more towards the branding side because it gives me the flexibility to incorporate everything into one project if it’s appropriate. This could be to develop a brand identity for a company and to achieve this create and design a bespoke typeface for their branding or create a series of posters to promote new venture. I have always liked the freedom a branding project can gave you as well because they often are looking for something new and interesting to make them stand out from everyone else. However also ensuring you are projecting their brand values to the audience.

However also ensuring you are projecting their brand values to the audience. I intent to develop my branding ability further this year, I already feel comfortable with my skills however there is still more you can learn and refine and want this year to be the time to do so before heading out into the design industry.
